Purchasing a new home is always exciting, however the process itself can be a little bit daunting. Organising, packing, sorting, ticking all the boxes – and remembering which boxes to tick!
To make your move easier we have put together a checklist of helpful hints and things to remember – so you can enjoy your new home and relax in the knowledge that everything is taken care of.
Susa’s Moving House Checklist
4 WEEKS BEFORE YOU MOVE
Discard, sell, or give away all unwanted items.
Notify insurance company and cancel or transfer all policies (house, life, car, medical)
Have you confirmed your removal company and date?
Notify bank and credit card companies and arrange transfer or closure of accounts.
Redirection for bank statements.
Advise change of address:
– Electoral office
– I R D
– Local authority
– Government departments
– Local clubs
– Police department (if you hold a fire arms license)
Cancel or transfer regular subscriptions e.g Sky.
If renting, advise your current landlord.
If moving overseas check passports, visas, travel bookings and accommodation is finalized.
2 WEEKS BEFORE YOU MOVE
Have your car serviced if moving a distance.
Arrange for cancellation of:
– telephone services
– milk delivery
Advise of new address for charging final readings/accounts.
Arrange for re-connection of gas, electricity and phone services at new address.
Arrange for pet transportation if necessary.
Return anything borrowed and collect anything loaned e.g. library books, patterns etc.
1 WEEK BEFORE YOU MOVE
Empty fuel from mowers.
Defrost the freezer.
Empty gas bottles.
Clean out medicine cabinet and dispose of unwanted drugs etc via Chemist.
Notify NZ Post for redirection of mail and send out change of address cards.
NZ Post – Fill out motor registration change of address form.
Water pot plants.
Sort out the garage.
Collect any items outstanding:
– dry cleaning
Tidy garden and remove all rubbish.
JUST BEFORE YOU MOVE
Remove food from fridge and defrost (at least 24 hours before moving).
Remove all pictures.
Have all washing done and dried.
Disconnect all appliances.
Anchor the drum of the automatic washing machine
Obtain medical and dental records, if moving out of area.
Get school records and references.
Keep aside jewellery, money, valuable documents, travel documents, to take with you personally.
Put aside items that will be immediately required in the new location e.g. kettle, tea bags, coffee, knife, scissors (place in one box that is easily recognised).
Arrange for simple breakfast on moving day (use disposable utensils).
Turn off water heater.
Tighten all taps.
Check gas, electric switches and lights turned off.
Lock doors and windows and return house keys.
Check nothing has been left behind.
A FEW DON’TS
If storing your household goods, the following articles are classified as DANGEROUS GOODS and cannot be stored:
- ammunition, paint, linseed oil,
- turpentine, kerosene, petrol,
- cleaning fluids.
Don’t have your furniture French polished just before moving as it will mark.
